Loving the current storyline…

All over the Internet there is talk of the DC relaunch and how the JSA will fit in. What about the current storyline? I’m enjoying it and am surprised I am. At first, I was not sure if I would like the Flash as a mayor and the JSA tied to this new town. But, it is amusing to see Jay deal with day-to-day issues. I am very curious what is happening under the city. I am excited to find out what this strange city is under Monument Point.

Also, I noticed the number 52 appeared in a panel in the current JSA issue. It was on the door to the apartment Mr. Terrific visits. I’m wondering if that was intentionally put in the panel to let fans know JSA will be connected to the new DC 52 number ones! Or maybe it was a funny coincidence that the writer or artist picked the number 52. Interesting…

Justice Society of America Disbands in 1951

In 1951, Per Degaton embarked upon a scheme to shatter the Justice Society of America once and for all. Operating from behind the scenes, he manipulated several high-ranking members of the Federal government into believing that the JSA had ties to communism. A special inquest convened and the JSA appeared before the House of Un-American Activities Commission (H.U.A.C.). After a lengthy hearing, the committee members demanded that the JSA members reveal their secret identities to the general public. The Spectre (in a showy display of power) vehemently argued on behalf of his colleagues, citing that without their secret identities, they would become targets for enemy agents across the globe. Unwilling to reveal their true faces, the Justice Society instead elected to disband. The public however, never lost faith in their heroes.

The Justice Society of America is DC Comics first and best super hero team. They are the best thanks to the team’s place in history, characters and continuity.

The Justice Society of America, or JSA, is a DC Comics superhero group, the first team of superheroes in comic book history. Conceived by editor Sheldon Mayer and writer Gardner Fox, the JSA first appeared in All Star Comics #3 (Winter 1940) [Taken from Wikipedia]. The team appeared in comics throughout the 1940s and for the first few years on the 1950s. Then, like many 1940s characters, they just faded away.

Besides being the first super hero team in history, the characters of the the Justice Society of America are among the best of DC Comics. Among their ranks in the 1940s were the first Wonder Woman, first Hawkman, first Flash, first Green Lantern, first Dr. Fate, first Atom, etc. Pivotal character! Later, in the 1960s and 1970s more amazing characters were added, such as the first Robin and Power Girl, Superman’s cousin. But, it is not only the relatives and first versions of classic characters that make the Justice Society important. Other members, such as the Spectre, Hourman, and Dr. Midnite, are well worth mentioning.

The final reason I enjoy reading Justice Society of America issues is the team’s decades-long continuity. Writers can, and do, draw on the team’s history from the Golden Age, Silver Age, and all other ages of comic book history. Justice Society writers also love to introduce legacy characters as a way to honor the team’s history. In the 1980s legacy characters, such as a new Dr. Midnite, Hourman, and Wildcat, were introduced. In recent years, yet another Dr. Midnite and new Mr. Terrific were added to the roster. There is no doubt as long as DC Comics exists, the Justice Society of America will exist.
